New to the UK
Welcome to Rivendell Flying High Academy
Information for Families New to the UK
A Warm Welcome
We are delighted to welcome families who are new to the United Kingdom to Rivendell Flying High Academy. Moving to a new country can be exciting, but it can also feel overwhelming - especially when navigating a new education system. Our aim is to make your child’s transition into school life as smooth, happy and supported as possible. You are now part of our diverse and welcoming Rivendell community, and we are here to help every step of the way.
Starting School in the UK
Schools in the UK may feel different from those in other countries. At Rivendell, the school day is structured to help children feel safe, secure and ready to learn. Children learn through a blend of whole class lessons, group activities and practical tasks. We have high expectations for behaviour, kindness and respect, and we support all children to meet these in a calm and nurturing environment. If anything is unfamiliar, please ask - we are always happy to explain how things work.
How We Support Children New to English
Many of our pupils speak more than one language and we celebrate this. If your child is learning English as an Additional Language (EAL), we provide:
- A warm welcome session to get to know them
- A buddy to help them navigate the school day
- Visual resources to support understanding
- Tailored English support at a level suited to their needs
- Regular checkāins to monitor confidence and progress
- Opportunities to use and celebrate their home language
We recognise the incredible value that bilingualism brings and encourage families to continue speaking their home language at home.
Daily Routines and Practical Information
The School Day
We provide clear routines to help children feel settled and secure. Your child’s class teacher will guide them through the school day, including lessons, playtimes and lunchtimes.
Uniform
Children at Rivendell wear a simple school uniform that helps them feel part of our community. We keep our uniform affordable and practical and we can support families who need help accessing it.
School Meals
All children in Early Years and Key Stage 1 receive a free school meal. Older children may be eligible for Free School Meals depending on family circumstances. Our kitchen provides a range of options, including vegetarian and allergy safe meals.
Attendance and Punctuality
In the UK, children are expected to attend school every day unless they are ill. Good attendance helps children make friends, settle in and make the best progress. If your child is unwell or you need help with routines, please contact us - we will support you.
Working in Partnership with Families
We know that strong communication helps children thrive. For families new to the UK, we offer:
- Support from staff who understand the needs of new arrivals
- Translation help where possible
- Assistance completing school forms
- Regular updates about your child’s progress
- A friendly office team who are always ready to help
We want every family to feel confident, informed and involved.
Life in Nottinghamshire
Starting a new life in Nottinghamshire means accessing new services. We can help you with:
- Registering with a GP or dentist
- Local Children’s Centre information
- Nottinghamshire library membership (free for all children)
- Advice on travel, parking and local transport
Please speak to us if you need support or guidance with any local services.
Celebrating Diversity
Rivendell Flying High Academy is a rich and diverse community. We celebrate the cultures, traditions and languages that our families bring to our school. Children learn about different cultures through assemblies, curriculum themes and shared celebrations. We value every child’s identity and ensure they feel proud of who they are.
