At Rivendell, we believe that outdoor learning and Forest School are essential in Foundation 2, providing children with rich, hands-on experiences that support their physical, emotional, and cognitive development, as well as having opportunities to apply and consolidate executive functioning skills in a practical way. Through exploration, problem-solving, and teamwork in a natural environment, children develop confidence, resilience, and a deep connection with the world around them.

Outdoor learning enhances key areas of the EYFS curriculum, promoting communication, creativity, and physical well-being, while encouraging children to take risks, build independence, and develop a love for nature. By immersing children in outdoor experiences, we help them grow as curious, engaged, and adventurous learners, laying the foundation for lifelong learning and well-being.

Woodland Wednesday is a dedicated, weekly opportunity for Foundation 2 children to take their learning outside. Rooted in the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) Framework, these sessions are carefully planned to align with curriculum Key Knowledge Progression Descriptors (KKPDs) and Early Years Development Matters check points. Each outdoor activity is designed to support children’s progress, ensuring meaningful and engaging learning experiences.

By exploring the outdoors, working together, and taking on new challenges, our children develop essential skills that prepare them for the future. Through Forest School, we nurture Respectful, Intrepid, Successful, and Engaged learners—children who RISE as Rivendellians, ready to embrace the world with curiosity and confidence.
