Our Nursery Curriculum

Within Nursery, our curriculum is taught across the year through our three enquiries. The enquiries all have an overarching question which the children work towards answering through an authentic outcome. Our enquiries are developed by driving and enhancing subjects.

In addition, our enquiries connect to our DEAL curriculum principles and shape the way the enquiries are planned and delivered.

Autumn term - What makes me, me?

This will be the first experience in school that children will have been able to explore their lives and the lives of their friends in Nursery. Through this enquiry, we want to explore, share and celebrate the children’s diverse heritage, own life stories, memories and family history.

In F2, children will build on this to develop their understanding of the history of their own life and the lives of significant others so that in KS1 children are able study a different period in British history.

Traditional tales will also be used to support the understanding of family and home for example studying the story of ‘The Three Little Pigs’ in Literacy and materials linked to this story in Science. In Art and Design, the children will design photo frames by adding drawings of things that are important to them. In DT, the children will make Diva lamps when celebrating Diwali and learn about how these are used to celebrate in Hindu and Sikh cultures.

Our Authentic Outcome

The children to created their own timeline of significant events and memories from when they were a baby until now. These key events include birthdays, christenings, family events and the significant and special people in their lives. The children took their timelines over to the local care home and shared these with the residents.

Spring Term - What makes a community?

In the Autumn term, the children will have learnt about others in their class and themselves as members of the school family.  Through this enquiry the children will develop their knowledge of their local community, the town in which they live and the world around them. This is the first time our children will be exposed to Brazil and Italy as countries of the world.

In F2, children will build on this to study the UK and Nottingham as the city where they live so that in KS1 children are able to build on their understanding of what makes a city to study the UK in more depth and capital cities of the home nations. Brazil features in the year 2 curriculum in the Spring term, in year 4 Brazil will be revisited when studying rivers and again in years 5/6 spring cycle 1 when studying the Amazon rainforest. Brazil features again in our 5/6 cycle 2 spring term.  Italy features in the Year 3 spring term Natural disasters enquiry and again when studying Romans in year 4. This is then explored more deeply in year 5/6 cycle one as an Axis country during WW2 and in cycle 2 when comparing developed and non- developed countries.

Within PSHE, the children will investigate and analyse the impact of humans on their local environment, this knowledge will be utilised when designing their class painting of the local environment in the style of David Hockney.

Our Authentic Outcome

Watch this space.... The children will be helping to create a video answering the question – what makes a community.  This will showcase all of our learning that we have done throughout this term.
