Relationships, Sex and Health Education (RSHE)

Relationships and Sex Education at Rivendell Flying High Academy

Why do we teach Relationship, Sex and Health Education (RSHE) at Rivendell?

At Rivendell, we believe that Relationships, Sex, and Health Education (RSHE) is a vital part of preparing our children for life in the modern world. RSHE helps children develop the knowledge, skills, and values they need to build healthy relationships, make informed choices, and understand the importance of physical and mental wellbeing.

Through our carefully planned, sequential and age-appropriate curriculum, we aim to empower children to navigate life with confidence, resilience, and respect for themselves and others. By teaching RSHE, we are equipping our children with the tools to stay safe, foster positive relationships, and contribute to their communities as responsible and empathetic individuals.

How do we teach RSHE at Rivendell?

At Rivendell, we use a blended approach to teaching Relationships, Sex, and Health Education (RSHE), drawing on high-quality resources such as SCARF and The Christopher Winter Project. These resources ensure that our curriculum is engaging, inclusive, and age-appropriate, supporting the overall objectives of RSHE: raising awareness of attitudes and values, developing personal and social skills, and promoting knowledge and understanding.

We wholeheartedly support the philosophy of RSHE, which we believe is most effective when embedded within our broader Personal Development Programme. RSHE at Rivendell is taught in an inclusive, non-judgemental way, celebrating diversity and ensuring all pupils feel valued and respected.

Relationships Education

Our teaching of Relationships Education provides the building blocks for forming positive and safe relationships with family, friends, and others, including online. Through these lessons, children learn what relationships, friendships, and families mean and how to treat others with kindness, consideration, and respect.

By the end of primary school, your child will have learned about:

  • Families and People who Care for Me
  • Caring Friendships
  • Respectful Relationships
  • Online Relationships
  • Being Safe

Health Education

Health Education equips children with the knowledge and skills they need to make informed decisions about their health and wellbeing, recognise issues in themselves and others, and seek support when needed.

By the end of primary school, pupils will have been taught about:

  • Mental Wellbeing
  • Internet Safety
  • Physical Health and Fitness
  • Healthy Eating and Lifestyles
  • Drugs, Alcohol, and Tobacco – Facts and Risks
  • Health and Prevention
  • Basic First Aid
  • Changing Adolescent Body

Parental Involvement and Rights

At Rivendell, we respect and value the important lessons you teach your child at home about healthy relationships, self-care, and staying safe. Our teaching complements and reinforces these lessons, forming a partnership between school and home.

We are committed to progressing our RSHE curriculum in consultation with parents. Your views are vital in shaping how and when we cover statutory content, as well as deciding on any additional non-statutory content. You can share your opinions through the form below, helping us ensure that our RSHE curriculum reflects the needs of our school community.

Right to Withdraw:

  • Relationships Education: You cannot withdraw your child from Relationships Education, as it is vital for all children to learn about friendships, families, and how to stay safe.
  • Sex Education: If you do not want your child to take part in some or all lessons on Sex Education, you can request that they are withdrawn. At primary level, this request must be granted by the Headteacher.
  • Science Curriculum: Please note that the science curriculum includes content on human development and reproduction, which is statutory and cannot be withdrawn from.

For more information about RSHE at Rivendell, please speak to Mrs Worthington (Personal Development Leader) or Miss Newson (Curriculum Lead), read our proposed RSHE policy, or review the guidance from Gov.UK using the link provided.

Review and Consultation

At Rivendell, working together with our families ensures that we get the very best outcomes for our children.  We are always looking for ways that we can build upon the already strong practice and offer that our children receive.

With RSHE being a key element of the curriculum and also supporting the safeguarding of our children, now and in the future, it is important to have your say!

We would love to hear your feedback regarding our policy, curriculum and approach.  By clicking the link to the Microsoft form below, you will be able to tell us about what you think is working well, any even better ifs and any suggestions or ideas you may have to support us to continue our work with your children.  Many thanks for your continued support!
