What is the Early Years in School and Why is it Important?
Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) at Rivendell
At Rivendell, we believe that the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) is a vital stage in a child’s education, laying the foundations for a lifelong love of learning. Our EYFS provision, which includes Nursery (F1) and Reception (F2), provides a nurturing and stimulating environment where children feel safe, valued, and excited to explore the world around them.
What Happens in EYFS?
The EYFS is a play-based curriculum designed to support children’s development through active learning and meaningful experiences. Our children engage in a balance of child-initiated and adult-led activities, carefully planned to develop key skills in:
✔ Communication and Language – Encouraging children to express themselves, develop vocabulary, and listen to others.
✔ Physical Development – Building strength, coordination, and confidence in both fine and gross motor skills.
✔ Personal, Social, and Emotional Development – Supporting children in forming relationships, managing emotions, and developing independence.
✔ Literacy – Introducing early reading and writing through phonics, storytelling, and mark-making.
✔ Mathematics – Exploring number recognition, counting, and problem-solving in practical ways.
✔ Understanding the World – Encouraging curiosity about people, places, and nature through exploration and hands-on learning.
✔ Expressive Arts and Design – Developing creativity through music, dance, role play, and art activities.
The Journey from Nursery (F1) to Foundation 2 (F2)
Our EYFS curriculum is designed to ensure a smooth transition from Nursery (F1) to Foundation 2 (F2), providing continuity and progression in learning. In Nursery, children develop confidence, independence, and key early skills through exploratory play and structured routines. As they move into Reception, learning becomes more structured with daily phonics, early writing and maths sessions, while still maintaining a play-based approach.
By the end of the EYFS, we aim for children to be well-prepared for the next stage of their education, with a strong foundation in key skills and a love of learning that will carry them into Key Stage 1 and beyond.
